Have you ever considered that birth is more than just a physical process? It’s a rite of passage, a journey that transforms not only your life but also your very sense of self. I like to think of birth as one of life’s best-kept secrets: it’s not just about bringing a baby into the world but also about stepping into a new, more powerful version of yourself. Today, I want to invite you to explore birth through the lens of the shamanic journey, an ancient archetype that connects deeply to themes of transformation, healing, and empowerment.

What Is a Shamanic Journey?

A shamanic journey, found in many indigenous traditions, is an intense experience of transformation. It often involves a series of challenges—physical, emotional, and spiritual—that guide an individual to a higher state of awareness or personal growth. These rites of passage can include facing fears, surrendering control, and ultimately emerging stronger and more connected to oneself and the world.

Birth parallels these journeys in profound ways. It is a sacred initiation into parenthood, marked by its own stages of transformation: preparation, descent, surrender, and rebirth.

Pregnancy as Preparation

The shamanic journey begins with preparation, and so does the path to birth. Pregnancy invites you to tune into your body in new and extraordinary ways. Hormonal changes heighten your senses and awareness, and physical transformations demand a reorientation of your daily life. While modern baby showers focus on gifts for the baby, many indigenous cultures honor the pregnant person through ceremonies like mother’s blessings inspired by the Navajo Blessingway, celebrating the transition from one phase to another in the feminine archetype: maiden to mother. This is your initiation into a new stage of life, a time to reflect on the strength and wisdom you already possess and to prepare for the challenges ahead.

Labor as Descent

Labor is the heart of the journey—a descent into the depths of your being. This is where you may encounter fears or doubts you haven’t fully faced before. It’s raw, intense, and vulnerable, yet it’s also where transformation begins.

During labor, your body enters altered states of consciousness, guided by waves of oxytocin and endorphins. These hormones help you navigate the intensity of contractions, much like the altered states often associated with shamanic rituals. Whether through breath, movement, or mantras, staying present in your body allows you to move through this stage, confronting and releasing what no longer serves you.

I often tell my clients that surrender is the key here. Birth is not about controlling every detail; it’s about trusting your body and instincts. In the words of one client, who used the mantra “I can do anything for one minute,” labor became an exercise in staying present and grounded. Each contraction was a step closer to the emergence of her new self.

Birth as Rebirth

The final stage of the shamanic journey is rebirth, and in birth, this is twofold: the arrival of your baby and the birth of a new version of you. After the intensity of labor, you emerge not only as a parent but as someone who has faced challenges, embraced vulnerability, and discovered new reserves of strength.

One client’s story stands out to me. She had to navigate an induction for preeclampsia and felt frustrated by the restrictions it imposed. Together, we worked through her feelings of disappointment, allowing her to release those emotions and refocus on the present. By letting go of her expectations, she was able to move through labor with renewed energy and welcomed her baby with clarity and joy.

Reclaiming the Sacredness of Birth

In today’s medicalized approach to birth, it’s easy to lose sight of its sacred nature. But we can reclaim it. Whether you give birth in a hospital, at home, or in a birthing center, there are ways to restore the sense of ritual and reverence:

  • Create a sacred space: Dim the lights, use candles or soft lighting, and surround yourself with comforting scents and sounds that ground you.

  • Incorporate meaningful traditions: Whether it’s cultural music, a special object, or a ritual like a mother’s blessing, these elements can help anchor you in the significance of the moment.

  • Embrace vulnerability and surrender: Allow yourself to lean on your support team and trust the wisdom of your body.

Birth is more than a physical act; it’s a portal to a new identity. Like a shamanic journey, it challenges and transforms you. It teaches resilience, interconnectedness, and the power of surrender. When you emerge, you are not just holding your baby—you are stepping into a new, stronger, more powerful version of yourself.

Share Your Journey

Every birth story is unique and powerful. If you’ve had a transformational experience or incorporated rituals into your birth, I invite you to share it. Together, we can change the narrative around birth from one of fear to one of empowerment and reverence.

Let’s honor birth for what it truly is: a sacred rite of passage, a journey to becoming.
